This was a very interesting blog piece that I read and responded to a couple weeks ago. I just thought that I would share this with others since it is such an interesting topic. I did minor editing to her piece, minor stuff like capitalizing the beginning of her sentences. Nothing more because it expresses her perfectly.

What I am actually (officially) doing here

So besides picking my nose and making granola, I am acting coordinator of BRA’s USAID Women’s Empowerment Program in the South East Border Regions of Haiti. (there’s a lot of possessives in that sentence, which about sums up how this kind of development work seems to go- everyone wants to be the owner of whatever good comes out of these projects and they do whatever they can to slap their emblem-laden banners all over the place). I have never been a big supporter of development projects that are written up like business reports and throw all kinds of money around. I don’t know anyone who is, probably because I hang out with liberals. I mean, almost everyone passing through the uber-enlightnened CDAE program at UVM has written a paper (or two or three) deriding the failure of one USAID project or another, myself included. Down here, signs for USAID projects are almost as common as billboards for Brugal Rum (the national poison).

Me di feel yu Haiti

Yesterday my phone rang, “Did you feel the tremor? I’m checking with you because no one at my house believes me.”  Of course I felt it, I answered. No one believed me at my house either.  


It’s amazing that I being in Belize, thousands of miles away felt a slight shake of the devastation that happened in Haiti. The earthquake, with a magnitude estimated at 7.0, struck Haiti Tuesday just before 5 p.m. about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince. Haiti is the poorest nation in that hemisphere, and such a hit surely will increase the people’s suffering for time to come.

Belize: San Ignacio's Saturday Market

Cayo Farmers' Market - San Ignacio, Belize

On the 22nd of December 2009, since I was working under the monitoring and evaluation section of BRDP, I along four other colleagues conducted a survey to measure the efficacy of the San Ignacio Market. I gathered necessary data to make a full report for the EU whom is the organization that largely financed the construction of the facility. Belize Rural Development Programme is directly financed by the European Union and is partnered with the government of Belize. BRDP’s mission is to try eradicate poverty by promoting sustainable economic development in rural areas of Belize, and they carry this out by providing projects that empower poor individuals and communities. Here are some selected pictures that show how incredible the experience was. That day was a success!
