Retire in Belize

A Central American paradise that offers beaches, beauty and a fast track to residency status.

Let’s fast-forward to Belize’s unique appeal to U.S. retirees: It's the only south-of-the-border country whose official language is English. Until 1973 it was called British Honduras, and was a crown colony of the U.K.; it was granted full independence in 1981 (although Queen Elizabeth II is still head of state).
Another goodie: It’s catching up to Panama and Costa Rica's retiree perks. Its Qualified Retired Persons program, known as the QRP, offers benefits and a fast track to residency status.

Ben Awe getting a Caribbean Sandwich!
I usually try to blog twice a month but as usual, I am pressed for time and can't find the opportunity to write as much as I desire. Luckily, a fellow Chaa Creek colleague shared his poem with me and I was extremely impressed with the message behind it. I wish I could provide more background knowledge on the poem but I have no clue what inspired him to write the vocabulary toolbox and if I was a better blogger, I should have ensured to have that answer  sorry.
If you are interested in finding out more information on the poem , you can contact Ben Awe through his facebook page.

Happy New Year to all, hopefully 2011 brings nothing but positive things for Belize.

To end this year, I must declare what I consider is the biggest 2010 accomplishment for Belize. Drum roll please... it is no other than the... MAYA LAND RIGHTS victory!

Maya Atlas Book

Today I am going to be comparing media houses. First I must say that in my regard, Belize has no independent media – such a tragedy. They either are UDP or PUP or proudly PUDP.

The issue of partiality affects Belize greatly because information or the lack of information is what directly elects politicians in our country, or should I say, Worldwide. On the 26 of November I read the article on Channel5belize.com titled Bank zeros in on Luke Espat. Before they broke the news, one sentence says: “[...] the signs of a bad economy have been hitting individual businesses very hard over the past year.” Of course this is true but my concern is why do they sugar coat the message?

Battle of the Drums 2010 and Drug Plane on Belize's Southern Highway

What was the probability of the one time I'm going to Punta Gorda I witness a Drug Plane in the middle of the Southern highway? Extremely unlikely! Of course I had to write about it.

I had taken a short hiatus from blogging since I was too busy with school, work and a personal project which I am extremely excited about but it's confidential for now – all I can say is that I have officially launched one of my career goals. Finally after finding some extra time, I am now writing a post to satisfy various requests of people who were concerned with my blogging going M.I.A.  I will write about my weekend experience – a very interesting weekend.

Currently I am taking an applied arts class at Galen and it happens to be drumming, Garifuna drumming and singing to be more specific. I'm having a lot of fun in this class but I can’t seem to get the best of it because I presume I am not artistically driven – my colleagues can testify to me not being able to make the most difficult drumming techniques.

This weekend our class traveled to southern Belize to partake in the fifth annual Battle of the Drums Competition which takes place every year in Punta Gorda town, Toledo.

Personally, other than an occasional 'scolding' by ubiquitous traffic officers, I have never received a parking violation ticket in my town(or anywhere) but I have witnessed many other people with minor 'slip-ups' get charged traffic violation fees because they weren't of enough important stature.
This week I'm doing a extremely short blog post, I will just put up pictures for you guys to make your conclusions; but not without beforehand giving a hint. This minister was paying the Cayo district a visit from the south.. and of course he could never get into any trouble - Belize's usual modus operandi.

Between Traffic Cones

Over the weekend my e-mail and facebook account were hacked. Supposedly it was some Russian guy who was trying to take advantage of my good looks and extensive network of friends; he was soliciting naked pictures from as many girls he could chat with. (haha)
Below are the instructions on how to recover Windows Live ID/ Hotmail – Msn – Live, once recovering my msn, I was able to ask Facebook for a password reset and I got my account back. If anyone of you guys gets hacked on Google mail, the same procedure may be used, except instead you ask Google support of course.

Museum of Drugs - Mexico City

It is not secret that Belize's strategic position as the bridge to North America has always been a prime location for drug smugglers as they move to their central locations in Northern Mexico. But as the US Govt. and Mexican Federales continue to crack down on the cartels, they are going to continue being pushed down more and more.. unfortunately resulting in Belize becoming one of their retreats. This is something that should already be on the discussion board for the GoB because when it hits, it will hit hard and 'silly' unprepared BDF or the Police won't be able to do anything! Just imagine, the US & MX Govt. can hardly put up a good fight with the Narcos, how will our untrained, unequipped officers?

Belize Politics? An Oligarch Sport

For those people who personally know me, you know that I am not politically driven(If that’s a term) but I am more of a concerned citizen who isn’t loyal to any one of the only two parties that rule Belize. I am similar to most of my friends whom believe education will free Belize from the shackles of the present oligarch and corrupt politicians, after all, information is what elects the politicians –either wrong information, or the lack of. I once posted a status update on facebook and twitter saying: "If everyone in Belize had a 6th form degree, we would have a better country." The reaction from people was surprising, many were against the thought, suggesting Belize wouldn’t properly survive without the uneducated poor since they are needed to do the 'dirty' work.

1. Use the vertical

The handheld camera has traditionally been a horizontal or landscape instrument. It is the way cameras are designed to be held, one of the reasons being that it is easier to hold them steady that way. But it is not the only way to take a photograph. Regular snapshots are often plagued with a boring consistency of being in the landscape format and sometimes it pays to think differently.
If you think the shot doesn’t look quite right, try turning your camera on its side and you will be surprised at how much of the difference it can make to your pictures. The camera might be designed in a landscape format, but unfortunately the world isn’t always suitably wide to fit into the frame. In fact, if you think about it, you probably spend most of your time behind your camera taking pictures of people, and the last time I checked people are most certainly not built in a landscape format. Make this simple change and you might be able to stand taller the next time you are sharing your holiday photos with friends.
